Telegram CEO: Privacy Matters More Than Money

Pavel Durov, Telegram’s founder and CEO, has made a statement regarding his recent arrest in France. Durov emphasized Telegram’s commitment to user privacy, stating that the company is prepared to leave any country that attempts to violate its users’ privacy rights.

Durov highlighted Telegram’s refusal to comply with Russia’s request for encryption keys for surveillance purposes and the platform’s ban in Iran due to its refusal to block channels used by peaceful protesters. He emphasized that Telegram’s commitment to privacy is a fundamental principle and that the company is not motivated by financial gain.

Open Communication with Authorities

Durov expressed surprise at the French government’s claim of being unable to contact him or the company, leading to his detention. He clarified that Telegram has an EU representative to facilitate communication with EU countries, including France. Telegram’s EU contact email is publicly available, making it straightforward for anyone to reach out with concerns.

Durov also noted his frequent collaboration with the French consulate in Dubai to address terrorism-related concerns in France.

Addressing Misuse

Acknowledging the misuse of Telegram by malicious individuals, Durov emphasized that this was not the platform’s intended purpose. He assured users that Telegram is committed to working with each region where the app is accessible to develop fair policies that balance user interests and regional security.

Durov indicated that internal discussions regarding policy adjustments have already begun and promised to share more details on their progress soon.

No Political Motivation

The arrest of Pavel Durov drew widespread attention, with French President Emmanuel Macron issuing a statement regarding the incident. Macron clarified that the arrest was not politically motivated, but rather a result of an ongoing investigation into Telegram’s activities.
