Former President Donald Trump is making waves in the crypto world. At the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville, he announced plans to embrace cryptocurrency if elected for a second term, calling for the U.S. to become a “bitcoin superpower.”
In his speech, Trump outlined his vision for a U.S. that leads the crypto world. He promised to:
- Make the U.S. the “crypto capital of the planet”
- Create a bitcoin “strategic reserve” using government funds
- Replace SEC Chair Gary Gensler with someone “who loves your industry, not hate your industry”
- Establish a crypto advisory council
Trump’s stance on cryptocurrency has changed significantly over the years. He previously expressed skepticism about crypto, calling it “highly volatile and based on thin air.” Now, however, he is embracing the digital currency.
Trump’s proposals have sparked conversation among crypto enthusiasts, and some are questioning his plan to commute the sentence of Ross Ulbricht, the founder of Silk Road. The Silk Road case remains controversial, and Ulbricht’s supporters believe he was unfairly sentenced for creating a website that allows people to buy and sell illegal items.
