A shocking discovery was made at a Louisiana elementary school when a young student was found in possession of cocaine.
The Incident
A 7-year-old boy’s mother, Mari Mejia Zelaya, checked him out of Metarie Elementary School to retrieve four bags of cocaine from his book bag. However, the boy had already removed the bags and placed them in his cubbyhole at J.C. Ellis Elementary School.
When Zelaya checked her son back into school, his teacher noticed the bags in his cubbyhole and alerted administrators.
Arrests and Charges
Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department responded to the incident and arrested Zelaya. She was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and cruelty to a juvenile involving drugs.
Detective Jeremy Budo stated that the bags contained 28 grams of cocaine. Additionally, Zelaya allegedly threw four ounces of cocaine under a vehicle outside the school.
Zelaya’s bail was set at $100,000. Assistant District Attorney Kellie Rish expressed confidence in the evidence against Zelaya, alleging criminal negligence and exposure of a child and classmates to narcotics.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. Zelaya remains in custody, and her case is expected to proceed through the legal system.
